ANTACIDS
Antacids, like Tums®,
neutralize the acid in your stomach, but they don’t block production of acid before it starts, like Nexium® 24HR. Antacids work quickly, but effects last for only 1-3 hours after use.
Nexium® 24HR
Frequent heartburn can be treated with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) like Nexium® 24HR. Nexium® 24HR stops the production of acid before it starts. By turning off many of the pumps that produce acid, one pill a day provides 24HR protection°—much longer than antacids and H2s. This treatment may take 1-4 days for full effect. See our products.
PPIS VS. ANTACIDS
What is the difference between PPIs and Antacids? Antacids neutralize stomach acid and work quickly, but effects last for only 1-3 hours after use. PPIs, like Nexium® 24HR, work differently by blocking the source of acid production for 24-hour frequent heartburn protection*. PPIs may take 1-4 days for full effect.
PPIS VS. H2 BLOCKERS
What’s the difference between PPIs and H2s? Histamine blockers (H2RAs) like Zantac® only block one of the signals that tell your body to make acid. They start working within 30 minutes, last for up to 12 hours, but become less effective if used for more than a few days in a row. PPIs, like Nexium® 24HR, work differently by blocking the source of acid production for 24-hour frequent heartburn protection*. PPIs may take 1-4 days for full effect.
°Use as directed for 14 days to treat frequent heartburn. Nexium® 24HR may take 1-4 days for full effect
